Ancient Historical Fiction

Chapter books or read alouds:

Mara, Daughter of the Nile by Eloise Jarvis McGraw

The story of Mara – a slave girl who serve as interpreter between pharoah Hatshepsut’s brother Thutmose and his betrothed - has a touch of romance, along with espionage and adventure. My boys enjoyed it in spite of the romance!

The Golden Goblet by Eloise Jarvis McGraw

An ancient Egypt mystery of sorts as Ranofer – the main character - tries to find a thief and a tomb raider. Ranofer is forced to live with his abusive step-brother, so there are some scenes that get a bit physical.

The Cat of Bubastes: A Tale of Ancient Egypt by G. A. Henty

Chebron (son of the Egyptian High Priest Ameres) and Amuba (a slave in the Ameres’ household) flee after Chebron accidentally kills a sacred cat – an act punishable by death. Battles and adventure ensue.

The Odyssey: An Epic Telling by Odds Bodkins

I can’t recommend this enough. It is captivating! It can get a bit tense, and may be scary to kids who are sensitive. I’d say ages 8+ could handle it.

Black Ships Before Troy by Rosemary Sutcliff

A story of the Trojan War.

For the younger set:

It’s all Greek to Me (Time Warp Trio) by Jon Scieszka

An early chapter book perfect for boys.

The Young Heroes series by Jane Yolen

My kids loved these!
