How Would You Improve Schools?

Katie Konrath over at Get Fresh Minds has opened the floor! A commenter on a previous post about the possibilities of change said:

  • 100 years ago, students were sitting in classrooms with a teacher and blackboard at the front.
  • 50 years ago, students were sitting in classroom with a teacher and a blackboard at the front.
  • 5 years ago, student were sitting in classrooms with a teacher and a whiteboard at the front.
  • Breathtaking speed of change! Education seems to be a little behind the curve.

Today, following up on that comment, Katie asks:

Should our schools be changing to meet the times?

I daresay she’ll have some good feedback, and I think home educators have a lot to say about what works in educating kids and what doesn’t.  Go give her YOUR two cents!

Wish I could remember where I read someone talking about if you took someone from 100 years ago or so, and plunked him down in today’s life, the *only* thing he would recognize is a school.

The schools aren’t changing much and the level of education is declining. Schools have become baby-sitters and parents. Wait, schools don’t educate, people do… and kids only learn when they are ready. Kids are just being force-fed and are regurgitating information… that’s not learning.

I took my child out of schools so that I wouldn’t have to worry about their *improvement* any longer. I’d like to say that I care about the state of the school system, but I don’t, I’m off that grid now.

I read the same thing that Andrea read. I think that the system is so broken that it can’t be fixed.

I’ve been browsing your blog today and have really enjoyed reading about your life as a home school educator and your life in general. I am working with the NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation to start a blog about entrepreneurship and education. I hope you’ll take a look and let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Julie
