Teaching Logic

I’ve wondered about introducing my kids - esp my youngest -  to a speech and debate program. Anyone know of a secular organization like this one?

I’m also interested in suggestions for logic programs/lessons/instruction. My youngest worries me sometimes in that he seems to lack a certain amount of common sense and the ability to deduce likely consequences. We’ve used logic workbooks (the series name is escaping me) and he likes the process of deducing who was wearing the green dress by using the grids provided. However, he seems unable to translate that skill into real life. If you’ve got a product suggestion, I’m all ears.

I will be most interested to see what responses you get from this post, because I often have the same thoughts about my eldest boy! He’s 11 and sometimes makes THE most idiotic decisions about things - or seems ABOUT to make idiotic decisions. I’ve always thought it an age thing, because he can whip off those answers to logic books in seconds. I’ve assumed that his theoretical knowledge is good, but his practical knowledge that requires more, err, practice.

Hi Kris!
Have you ever looked at the online logic links that Jennifer, from Toad Haven has on her web page? GB loves those, and he doesn’t even understand that he’s learning how to process logically, because the games are so entertaining. I will admit to playing with them myself. She’s got a great collection.
Btw, I’ve been meaning to ask you, or someone else at homeschool journal, are you getting comments emailed to your home email address, or like me, do you have to manually check each post for comments? I just wondered if this was my own problem, or a problem with the whole site?

Hi Kris! My 15yo took an 8-week public speaking class with Toastmasters this past winter and loved it. It’s called the Youth Leadership program and includes how to run a meeting, different organizational roles, etc. That may not be exactly what you’re looking for but thought I’d throw it out there anyway.

As for logic, the 12yo enjoyed the problems in the beginning of his brother’s geometry book so I am looking for more of those to throw in with next year’s math. I’ll let you know if I find anything good!
