Homeschoolers in College

With a teen in the house, one can’t help but think about college as one of the possibilities for the future. As such, I appreciated reading Tammy’s post today at Just Enough, and Nothing More. In particular, the first paragraph of the quote cracked me up:

My son had his first college class today, and I’m thinking I’ve finally discovered a negative to homeschooling - his expectation was that he would learn a lot today and he was disappointed.

My daughter will be in her 2nd yr in college in NYC this fall. She chose a university that has seminar-style classes for the most part. She found taking a class or 2 in areas that hold no interest for her a waste of time, but she learned a lot about herself. She learned that she could do well in a classroom environment (having only experienced one for 6 weeks when she was 5); she learned that she does indeed have the skills to find out what she needs to know and to navigate a system. Academically she found out that she had no problem and did well.
I am doing a meeting for new and wannabe homeschoolers this evening.
She told me to take her old portfolios (our assessment tool) and be sure to tell them that she’s in college in NYC with all A’s and 1 B+ :-)
