An environmental no-brainer

According to EnviroSax, an estimated 12 million barrels of oil is required to make the 380 billion plastic bags we use in America each year (!). I’m aiming for a one-hundred percent reduction of these bags coming into my house by the end of the year. It’s easy to forget to bring reusable bags (I usually have a half-full cart before I remember and go back out to get mine out of the car), but this is so important. It’s one simple step.

Instead of those disposable bags, check into all of these options. Or perhaps try making your own. And if you’re up for a challenge, join me in this effort and let me know you’re doing so by posting a comment. It’s an opportunity to make a difference in our world and to educate our kids about the reduction of unnecessary excess.

Off soapbox now…

My dad and stepmom were ahead of the curve. They’ve been toting their own bags to stores — and getting odd looks — for years. I’ve finally gotten with the program. It’s easy to remember to take my bags because I need them to tote my returnable milk bottles. :-) Baby steps … baby steps!

we’ve been doing that for a while now. The grocery stores here are all selling dirt-cheap (made in china unfrtunately) bags to encourage people to use them. I’ve got some of those becasue they’re easier for the clerks to use, but I’m slowly building a pile of totes I made myself.

GB and I are quite passionate about this subject, too! In fact, we take our little totes everywhere with us. I’ve found a million uses for them. Plus, I think they hold a lot more stuff than those dumb plastic pieces of cr*p! And if we are in a store without the totes and the clerks will let us, we often walk out of a store with no bag at all!

I was going to tell you about Andrea’s totes but I see she was her first. So, to top it off, she gets a round of scowls from all of us if she forgets them ;)

I now empty my groceries and immediately put my bags back in my car so I am not unexpectedly with out them!!! A friend brings a milk crate in for the hevy stuff-good idea I am going to try. Also I am working on crocheting more bags to sell eventually!

Funny. I think this is one of those black/white issues - the only people to respond so far are the ones already implementing reusable bags to some degree. Love the milk crate idea!

you know, I totally forget that one grocery store her has plastic crates for use there, and even the special carts, but hardly anyone uses them as it takes too long to check out your goods.

We have a bunch, but they are sturdier than the usual laundry baskets. ;)
