Allow me to Grumble

This just in:

“Perhaps we should explain what PVC pipe is.”

Dear person who is editing my book:

Are you serious?

###

Dear blog visitors:

If you do NOT know what PVC pipe is, would you please be brave enough to comment? If there truly is a lack of knowledge about PVC pipe in the world, by all means we need to explain it. But I’m thinking that wasting words on a description of PVC pipe would be as ridiculous as explaining what a tire is.

A Fish Named Fred

This is Fred:

We love Fred, even though the camera doesn’t do him justice. Let’s just say he’s vividly colored.

I decided that it would be fun to make a quilt for the couch that matches Fred. So I gathered all of my scrap fabric - plus a few new patterns - and started my first crazy quilt.

Bright, yes? Even though it doesn’t look like it here, the squares actually do a nice job of reflecting Fred’s brilliance.

I’ve never made a crazy quilt before, and I must say, I’m loving the randomness of it (I have a tendency to not like to follow specific directions. Ahem.). Six squares done this weekend - I’ve SO needed to have a project like this to distract me from work and the computer.

Superdelegates - again

From MoveOn.org:

This is pretty outrageous: a group of Clinton-supporting big Democratic donors are threatening to stop supporting Democrats in Congress because Nancy Pelosi said that the people, not the superdelegates, should decide the Presidential nomination.1

It’s the worst kind of insider politics—billionaires bullying our elected leaders into ignoring the will of the voters.

But when we all pool our resources, together we’re stronger than the fat cats. So let’s tell Nancy Pelosi that if she keeps standing up for regular Americans, thousands of us will have her back. And we can more than match whatever the CEOs and billionaires refuse to contribute. Click here  to add your name to our statement.

The statement reads: “The Democratic nomination should be decided by the voters—not by superdelegates or party high-rollers. We’ve given money—and time—to progressive candidates and causes, and we’ll support Speaker Pelosi and others who stand up for Democracy in the Democratic Party.”

An environmental no-brainer

According to EnviroSax, an estimated 12 million barrels of oil is required to make the 380 billion plastic bags we use in America each year (!). I’m aiming for a one-hundred percent reduction of these bags coming into my house by the end of the year. It’s easy to forget to bring reusable bags (I usually have a half-full cart before I remember and go back out to get mine out of the car), but this is so important. It’s one simple step.

Instead of those disposable bags, check into all of these options. Or perhaps try making your own. And if you’re up for a challenge, join me in this effort and let me know you’re doing so by posting a comment. It’s an opportunity to make a difference in our world and to educate our kids about the reduction of unnecessary excess.

Off soapbox now…

It’s Getting Interesting…

Last weekend we drove from Pahala to Hilo and back, which took us past Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. On the first pass, we could see some smoke from Halema’uma’u Crater, but not a lot. There was a slight smell of sulfur in the air. Coming back, the smoke plume was much more evident and we could see the smoke drifting along the coastline (and then inland, right to where they boys were!). This smoke is the result of a gas explosion that happened inside the crater last week that scattered rock over 75 acres.

Access to the overlook at  Halema’uma’u Crater is closed for safety reasons, but the scientists have installed a webcam that updates every 5-10 minutes. It’s a pretty amazing scene and a perfect opportunity for couch geologists to have a look at what’s going on (without dealing with respiratory issues!).

Solid Advice

I am preparing to be interviewed for a podcast on team building. This makes me nervous. Evan’s advice?

“Just don’t use your business voice.”

I guess my nervous voice sounds very much like a business voice.

Ratings for Books?

Robin has a post up about books and whether they should - or shouldn’t - be rated ala movies and TV shows.  I’ll bet that this one generates a fair amount of  conversation…

Happy - um - Easter!

Husband napping. Kids still in jammies (at 2 pm). Because of this:

We left Friday to pick Brad up at his music workshop and stayed an extra day and then some to see the lava flowing into the ocean at Kalapana. Currently, the lava is flowing mostly underground so there wasn’t the opportunity to get up close that we had hoped for. Even so, it was incredible to see. Unfortunately, nighttime photography isn’t my forte (though it has piqued my interest), so while many photos were snapped, few were wonderful.

We didn’t get home until midnight or so, thus the lazy day today. Well worth it, though.
