Guava and Lilikoi

The guava trees and lilikoi vines are hanging heavy with fruit. The roads are littered with fallen fruit, most of which is mashed up by car tires. Evan and I went for a walk today and netted about eight pounds of fruit, from roadside trees (makes me thing of Fallen Fruit). We never head out without a plastic bag in our pocket; we never know what we’ll find! Almost makes up for my lack of garden space.

I cannot work with other people in my house!

I don’t mean the family. I mean other people. My son is having an ‘ukulele lesson and one would think that with everyone otherwise occupied I could get something written. But I can’t! I keep putzing back and forth through the house hoping that I’ll come up with something clever to do, but so far that’s limited to checking my email and drinking another glass of water. It makes me feel all nervous and jumpy to have someone else in my space. This happens to a lesser degree even when my kids have friends over. I’ve managed to rein in that beast somewhat, but I still can’t entirely focus until I have my space back.  Introvert much?? Sigh.

$3.50

We happened across our library’s book sale yesterday, quite by accident. I really don’t need any new books. And yet. Who can pass up books that are so cheap??

For $3.50 I scored:

  • iMac for Dummies (I’m considering taking the plunge from PC to Mac)
  • Ladder of Years by Anne Tyler
  • Pearl Harbor Ghosts by Thurston Clarke
  • Star-Crossed by Linda Collison
  • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
  • Wicked by Gregory Maguire
  • Schindler’s List by Thomas Keneally
  • TWO of the newest Uru computer games with their manuals (when I make that Mac switch, the kids will have some freedom with my old computer - but til then, they’re sitting sadly on a shelf)
  • The Kingdom Keepers by Ridley Pearson (which Evan has already finished and proclaimed “excellent”)

For $3.50!

In other book news, I just finished Lottery by Patricia Wood. What a nice read! My book club had been looking for something lighter than the past several book choices, and Lottery fit the bill perfectly. Thanks to Larramie for the suggestion!

Have you ever?

Been halfway through running errands - in public - when you got a glimpse of yourself in a store window and realized that, even though you put a load of clothes in the dryer and put on a decent top this morning, you never actually changed out of the ugly, bright green, don’t match anything, pull them on because there’s nothing else to wear pants before you left?

Just wondering…

Barack Obama on LinkedIn

He’s asking:

How can the next president better help small business and entrepreneurs thrive?

I believe you have to be a member (free) of LinkedIn in order to respond.

Selling a Car in Hawaii

We are selling a car. I stopped by the DMV online to see what the process is to change ownership and transfer the title to the new owner. Here is what I found:

Hawaii is relatively laid back when it comes to the transfer from the lienholder.

Did I mention this was on the DMV site??

Another Homeschooling Author

Former teacher turned superauthor (and my son’s hero) Rick Riordan is homeschooling one of his boys. How did I miss that little tidbit? Or did I know it and forget (entirely possible)?

Tools of the Trade

I’ve been asked to participate in a career day one of the local schools. The organizer was very nice and explained how the day would work. Then she told me that she’s asking everyone who is participating to bring the “tools of their trade”. Here’s what I’m thinking:

  • The little pile of hair I tore out during my last edit session.
  • The wall calendar I keep eyeing, in dread anticipation of my next edit session.
  • The rags I keep handy to mop up the coffee spilled on my keyboard.
  • The box of laundry detergent I use as a doorstop because, goodness knows when I’m on deadline it’s not being used to keep up with the laundry.
  • My driver’s license, used regularly as I haul my kids from place to place during which I squeeze three minutes of work into five hours on the road.
  • My bottle of aspirin.
  • Maybe I’ll even bring a pen and paper.

Notice to Online Sellers

What is up with this?

Orders for Alaska and Hawaii require additional shipping and insurance charges.

Why? Did you miss the news about Alaska and Hawaii joining the United States? We use the same postage as the 48 states on the mainland. The same postal service. We can even get mail via the same flat rate boxes. Why then, does your automatic online order form want to charge 5 million dollars to ship a CD?

Lego Coolness

If you played with Legos as a kid, here’s the place to take a trip down memory lane. You’ll find building instructions for tons of different models, clear back to the olden days - 1958, say. You can search by year (fun for the adults in the family for sure), but better for Lego building fiends like my boys, you can search by theme.
