Good Intentions, One Local Summer

I’ve had good intentions to create one local summer meal each week, but somehow I always miss. I have been conscious about trying to choose more local produce for our dining pleasure, but an entire meal has been elusive.

We went to the Hilo Farmer’s Market on Saturday and filled our ice chest with fresh island goods.

Here you see something called a strawberry avocado (still green inside), lilikoi, green onion, daikon, WHITE pineapple (from Maui, so not SO local), and fresh Thai basil ($1/bunch!).

I will consider last night’s dinner to be my one local summer meal: fresh tomatoes (not pictured) nearly as good as homegrown, crunchy daikon sprinked with alae salt, and lilikoi. We don’t have to actually cook for it to count, do we?
Of course, this was topped off with macadamia nut shortbread cookies from the Big Island Candy Company. Mm, mm.

Plus, I have plans to transform that basil into macadamia nut pesto, for another somewhat localized meal.

And a strawberry avocado tastes like?

Well, I’m not a big avo fan, so to me it seems quite like any other avo. I’ll let you know what my hubby has to say, though!

I’m wondering if chicken strips and potato wedges from the Safeway deli count for a local meal …

You are so much more ambitious than me, my friend! I consider it a good day if my kids eat one serving of vegetables …

Mmm, that looks so good.

Shelly….well….I don’t think that’s what they had in mind, hon. ;-)

Larramie, update on the avos: they taste pretty much like any other avo. But the white pineapple? To Die For. The flesh is white and sweet and not nearly as acidic as regular pineapples. Mm. Mm.

It is beautiful! so it feeds the soul as well as the body.
We had salad (lettuce and tomatoes from my garden) , green beans from the farmer’s market (the drought, bugs and floods got my beans), and blueberry cobbler (Blueberries from my bushes before the caterpillars arrived). Delicious.

White pineapple? Something new to me. Must check it out when I visit my family next month.

Jama, it should still be in season! It is the best. Apparently it cannot be shipped to the mainland (?) so it’s a get it while you’re here kind of thing. When will you be here? I’ll be on Oahu for an assignment Oct 4-7…

it absolutely counts if it isn’t cooked! It’s what’s eaten that counts…

I’m so jealous of your local avacados! I miss avacado. I miss it with a burning, longing that causes me to stand over the display of 3500 mile avacados in the grocery…at $2 a pop…and talk myself into and out of buying them ten times before I walk away without. Boo hiss.
